The militants are increasingly targeting Westerners in non-Western countries. Attacks on hotels and museums in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt have killed or injured dozens of Europeans. More than 200 Russians on their way home from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheikh were killed when their plane exploded. An Italian aid worker was shot to death in Bangladesh.
At the same time, about half the deadly attacks on Westerners took place on European soil. Bombings in Turkey alone have claimed about 150 lives.
