Musk Quote of the Week
“Fossil fuel merchants of doubt have been pushing that bs for years. Tesla Gigafactory will be 100% renewable powered (by Tesla Solar) by end of next year.” (Read Musk’s declaration here and more about the Gigafactory’s progress here).
Tesla
The Tesla Semi is making its mark. The all-electric truck visited J.B. Hunt this week as part of a cross-country road trip. The trucks aren’t set to enter production until next year, but its whisper quiet operation is already turning heads. Read more.
The Semi won’t launch as part of a private company, though. Musk reversed course this week after speaking with investors and deciding against the move. Musk claimed he’d already got Goldman Sachs and Silver Lake on board to oversee the deal, but questions swirled about where the funding would come from. Read more.
Nvidia also confirmed to Inverse this week that the company is still working with Tesla, despite Musk’s announcement of a new autonomous driving chipto replace the Nvidia chip that will launch in the coming months. It’s a marked change from Tesla’s relationship with Mobileye, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company would be “more than happy to help” if Tesla’s in-house chip doesn’t pan out. Read more.
What’s Next for TeslaAutopilot version 9 is expected to launch imminently — complete with a number of Atari games, alongside improved semi-autonomous driving. Over the coming weeks, Tesla will also roll out a free 14-day Autopilot trial to eligible vehicles.
SpaceX
SpaceX’s Crew Dragon recovery vessel made a splash this week. GO Searcher will help bring the manned capsule out of the water when it returns from the International Space Station. The capsule, alongside Boeing’s Starliner, will make history as the first commercial capsules to send American astronauts into space. Read more.
What’s Next for SpaceX: The company is set to launch the Telstar 18 Vantagecommunications satellite from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on September 9 at 11:28 p.m.
