Năm 2006, khi chỉ mới có tin bác Triết sắp trở thành chủ tịch nước (thôi) mà dư luận – trong cũng như ngoài nước – đã râm ran tán thưởng quá xá. Ký giả Karl D John (Asia Times) hăm hở đưa tin:
“Nguyen Minh Triet, 63, another southerner, was confirmed as president by the National Assembly on Tuesday... And there is a widespread perception he will be more active than his predecessor, particularly in implementing economic and legal reforms that pave the way for Vietnam's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) this year" – Theo nhận xét chung thì ông sẽ năng nổ hơn người tiền nhiệm, đặc biệt trong lĩnh vực cải tổ kinh tế và pháp luật, làm nền cho VN gia nhập tổ chức WTO trong năm nay.”
