U.S. general killed, other troops wounded in Afghanistan attack, say U.S. officials - CNN

(CNN) -- An American general was killed Tuesday after a shooter wearing an Afghan military uniform opened fire at a training facility in Kabul, U.S. officials told CNN's Jim Sciutto.
At least 15 coalition troops, including other Americans, were wounded in the attack at Camp Qargha, Sciutto was told.
Earlier the German military said one person was killed and 14 were injured. One of those wounded was a German brigadier general. The German military said the incident occurred during a "key leader" event.
The Afghan Defense Ministry described the shooter as a "terrorist" and said Afghan soldiers shot him dead.
NATO's International Security Assistance Force said the incident took place between local Afghan and ISAF troops.
In the past, people dressed as Afghan security forces have attacked coalition forces who have worked to thwart such violence.

U.S. General Killed in Afghanistan Attack

KABUL—An individual wearing an Afghan military uniform on Tuesday shot dead a U.S. major general, the most senior American officer killed since the war began, and injured 14 other coalition soldiers, including a German brigadier general, U.S. and military officials said.
Three senior Afghan officers we also injured in the attack, which took place at a training facility for Afghan officers in Kabul. The facility's commander was among the wounded officers, Afghan officials said.
The German military, in a statement, said the attacker opened fire on U.S.-led coalition soldiers visiting the facility at midday Afghan time and that the victims included a German brigadier general, whose injuries weren't life-threatening. The statement added that one coalition soldier was killed, without providing further details.
Maj. Gen. Mohammad Afzal Aman, chief of operations at the Afghan Ministry of Defense, said three senior Afghan military officials were wounded in the attack, including the commander of the facility.
The shooting took place at the Afghanistan National Military Academy, located on the Marshal Fahim National Defense University complex in Kabul, according to a statement released Tuesday by the U.S.-led International Security Assistance Force. The complex is an Afghan National Security Forces facility, the statement said.
While the statement would only confirm an "incident," Maj. Gen. Zahir Azimi, the Afghan Ministry of Defense spokesman, said that a "terrorist wearing an Afghan National Army uniform" turned a weapon on academy instructors and foreign visitors. The attacker was killed, Gen. Azimi added.
The U.K.-funded facility, loosely modeled on the British military academy at Sandhurst, began training aspiring Afghan officers in October. The British military has helped train the recruits, who on campus are supposed to be unarmed.
This is the second insider attack at the academy: Days after it first opened, an Afghan soldier opened fire and injured two coalition troops close to the academy's entrance.
"We are aware of reports of an incident at Qargha," a U.K. Ministry of Defense spokesman said. "The incident is under investigation and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."
In a separate incident, an Afghan guard shot at a foreign soldier as he was exiting a government compound in the eastern province of Paktia, according to Afghan police. The soldier was injured.
Ghulam Dastagir Rassoulyar, the deputy police chief of Paktia, the motive is unclear and that authorities are investigating the incident.
Such "green-on-blue" incidents crested in 2012, when at least 61 coalition troops were killed by Afghans in military or police uniform. Such incidents have been less frequent in recent months, as the coalition reduced its presence and U.S. and allied troops took added precautions such as visiting their Afghan counterparts under the watch of "guardian angels"—or armed guards poised to shoot potential attackers.
