Australia and New Zealand have both welcomed the arrival of 2019
in fine style with displays of fireworks watched by millions of people.
Brits still have hours to wait until festivities begin, but millions of people Down Under are already celebrating the arrival of the new year after clocks ticked past midnight.
Revellers celebrated in Sydney and in Auckland, New Zealand. Among the first to bring in the New Year were people in Samoa. It became 2019 there at around 10am UK time.
But thousands of people waiting to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks around Sydney harbour were battered by torrential rain as a thunderstorm swept the city hours before midnight.
The New Year's firework display from the Sky Tower in Auckland, New Zealand, was among the first displays at a major city marking the beginning of 2019.
The island nation of Samoa also had a huge party to kick off the new year.
At about midnight, the Government of Samoa posted on Facebook for its citizens, writing: “Samoa welcomes the New Year in style”.
Fireworks exploded over the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House.
The Sydney fireworks show featured more than 100,000 pyrotechnic effects to a musical soundtrack.
Thousands began to gather early in the day at the Sydney Opera House and the ends of the Harbour Bridge
In Melbourne, 14 tons of fireworks were deployed, and in Brisbane, an estimated 85,000 people watched as fireworks exploded from five barges moored on the Brisbane River.
A traditional early family fireworks show was held at the landmark in Australia hours before midnight to gear spectators up.
In London, hundreds of thousands of New Year's Eve revellers are expected to watch firework displays across the capital.
For those in London, and across most of the country, mild and cloudy conditions are predicted, which may make watching firework shows tricker.
Forecaster Sophie Yeomans from Met Office said there was a “small chance of slight rain” during the day in some parts of the UK but overall “most places will be quite dry and mild”.
Party-goers have still been warned to “wrap up warm if you are heading out” however, as temperatures will continue to drop to around 5C in the early hours of the morning.
