Houston April 11, 2017

Most Eminent Cardinal,

April 30, 1975, is the most mournful, inconsolable day in deep sorrow of all Vietnamese people in the past 42 years from the fall of South Vietnam to communism. The communist regime had shown countless sorrow, resentment, and misery to the citizen and turned Vietnam into one of the poorest countries in the world.
Presently, we're strongly disturbed to learn that the Vietnamese Martyrs' Church in Houston will hold their annual Crawfish Festival on the weekend of the Black April, the date that considered by all Vietnamese refugees overseas as a tragic milestone.
As one of our Monsignors in Oslo expressed that remembering the days of Black April in 1975 is reminiscent of gratitude, to cherish the noble sacrifices that have helped to give us a life in freedom today. This respect and gratitude must be engraved to your life. Lack of this consciousness may not only be unintentional but also ungrateful to over 250,000 Vietnamese soldiers along with over 58,000 American soldiers who had laid their lives to protect our liberty and more than 500,000 people who had sacrificed their lives to the pirates and the angry ocean on their way to escape from communism.
As Karl Marx, the leader of atheism has a sarcastic remark, but it is worth thinking: "Only animals turn their backs on the suffering of their own race to care for their pelage."
We had addressed this issue directly to Rev. Joseph Thanh Vu - the Parish Priest, and receive no response by phone or email. Therefore, in the name and grief of the Vietnamese Nationalist Refugees and for the survival of our Motherland, we boldly wrote this letter to present to you and urge you to take this critical issue into your consideration and advice the Vietnamese Martyrs' Church to avoid their Crawfish Spring Festival celebration at this iconic moment.
Sincerely,
